Fremont – Playing up a level in Fremont last weekend, during the Fall Spinoff Tournament, was an exceptional challenge for the Silicon Valley Express. While currently listed as a AA Level team, the Express completed pool play 4-0 against four AAA level teams and entered the playoff round having to face the Peninsula Nationals, an experienced Majors level team.
The Express played three straight games on Saturday during pool play. A 5-1 victory over the California Bulldogs (San Jose), followed by a 5-4 squeeker against the familiar Islanders (Alameda) and then an 8-0 win against the Panthers (Burlingame) rounded out a 3-0 day.
Needing a win to guarantee the No. 1 seed for Division A going into Sunday, the Express faced the Brentwood Blast Red and were victorious 8-1, setting up a playoff match with the Nationals.
In the playoff, the Express lost 10-1 in four innings, due to the eight-run mercy rule after four innings. Despite the loss, it was another successful tournament, going 4-1 and finishing third overall out of 12 teams.
