San Jose – With the Sobrato High football set to begin play in the West Valley Division of the Blossom Valley Athletic League, coach Dan Brown is starting to see all the pieces fall into place.
“We’re excited for league,” Brown said. “We’re just glad to have to potential to get everything rolling where feel like we’re going into game with no question marks.”
A big reason for the renewed enthusiasm is the expected return of sophomore Erick Levell. Levell was slated to be Sobrato starting quarterback before breaking his thumb on his right throwing hand late in the Bulldogs’ preseason scrimmage.
But the cast is off now for Levell and, while Brown hasn’t decided if he will play quarterback or not, the athletic Levell will be on the field Saturday when Sobrato takes on San Jose High Academy at Live Oak at 6pm.
“I’m glad to see him back,” Brown said. “He’s a stallion.”
Brown complimented the play of fellow sophomore Alex Meldrum, who stepped up and took over the quarterback role in Levell’s absence. Meldrum is expected to see action as a receiver and possibly at running back, while continuing to play defensive back.
“What’s nice is we don’t have to worry about a back up,” Brown said. “He’s done an admirable job.”
What Sobrato does have to worry about is San Jose running back Rogelio Villa. Villa led the Central Coast Section last season with more than 2,000 yards on the ground and has picked up right where he left off.
He’s already racked up 324 yards on the ground and also leads the team with 69 yards receiving and seven touchdowns.
“He’s very quick, very explosive,” Brown said. “He has another gear.”
While Villa will be tough to stop, Brown has his team confident going into the game.
“They’re a beatable team,” he said. “They’re by no means just some powerhouse squad. We believe we can compete. We’re going in feeling we can win the game.”
