From the history of life on earth to a glimpse into the future, Dr. Art Sussman has a talent for making science understandable, interesting, relevant and fun for students of all ages. On Oct. 24, students at Mount Madonna School will have the opportunity to witness Sussman in action, when Dr. Art’s Planet Earth Show comes live to the scenic mountain campus.
Planet Earth Show combines scientific demonstrations with audience participation to help people understand how Earth functions, with a systems approach to matter, energy and life.
“These three principles provide a simple yet powerful framework for understanding how our planet has been working for billions of years,” explains Sussman, “and for analyzing environmental issues such as global climate change.”
Through his unique, very visual presentation, Sussman captures the imagination, illustrates ecological principles, and sends people away with new understandings and smiles on their faces.
A science educator for nearly 30 years, Sussman also authored the award-winning text, Dr. Art’s Guide to Planet Earth, and earlier this year published, Dr. Art’s Guide to Science. He received his doctorate in biochemistry from Princeton University and conducted scientific research at Oxford University, Harvard Medical School and the University of California.
Sussman currently works at WestEd in San Francisco, where he assists in developing various states’ science education programs and presents Dr. Art’s Planet Earth Show at conferences and museum science centers nationally and internationally. His show is rarely presented for school audiences, and Mount Madonna School is pleased to host him for this special engagement.
