Gilroy-based team advances to third round of single-elimination
portion of tournament, faced Roger Clemens’ son in pool play
game
The Gilroy-based Silicon Valley Xtreme 12-and-under baseball team went 4-6 during their stay in the Cooperstown Dreams Park tournament in Cooperstown, N.Y.
The Xtreme started play Sunday with a 10-7 victory over the Dublin (Ohio) Green Sox.
Ryan Bay knocked out the Xtreme’s first home run in the third inning of the opener to seal the victory over Dublin. Jordan Talbot earned the victory with five innings of hard pitching and was relieved by Gilroy’s Brandon Villar.
The Xtreme then lost a twice-delayed game due to weather to the Pittsburgh Wild Thing later Sunday.
In that game, the Xtreme led 1-0 in the first inning. But the weather turned bad and the teams were ordered back to the club houses due to lightning and thunder storms.
After a second weather delay, Wild Thing took the lead and held the Xtreme to one additional run on the team’s second home run in New York, hit by Talbot. The Xtreme ultimately fell 3-2.
The Xtreme fell twice on Monday, including a 12-11 slugfest loss to the North Florida Hurricanes that saw Talbot and Villar hit home runs.
Pool play continued Tuesday and the Xtreme lost to the Mt. Olive Marauder 9-6. They then faced off against the Texas Longhorns, a team that includes Kacy Clemens, the son of future Hall of Famer and current Houston Astros star pitcher Roger Clemens.
With the elder Clemens watching the game while sitting on a bucket in the Longhorns dugout, the Xtreme lost, but the players ended the game on a positive note by having their picture taken with the star major leaguer.
The Xtreme finished pool play with a 4-0 win over the Roswell Centennial Knights. Ryan Bay pitched 5 2/3 innings and allowed no runs, two hits and struck out five.
In the single elimination tournament play, the Xtreme began with a 2-1 win against the Throwin Leather and continued with a 4-2 over the Downers Grove Longshots. They were eventually knocked out with a 6-2 loss to the Virginia Vipers, who went on to reach the semifinals.
