Mustang season summary
This year’s Mustang Division was marked by tight battles for first place and the top seed for the playoffs. Both the American League and National League winners were decided by tiebreakers as the Yankees and Mariners had identical division win-loss records. The Yankees ended up getting the nod in the American League as the top seed when they won the coin flip (in their division series against the Mariners they each won a game by the score of 5-4).Â
The National League also ended in a tie, with the Cubs getting the top spot based on the fact that they had a higher run total in their series split against the Giants.
Despite the weather and the numerous rescheduling of games all teams finished their regular season division games prior to the Memorial Day break. Remaining interleague regular season games were completed the week of May 29.Â
The playoffs began on June 4 and will end Saturday, June 18 with the City Championship being played at Britton at 11:30am.

Cubs 12, Diamondbacks 11
In the second round of the National League playoffs, the Cubs squeaked by the Diamondbacks in a thrilling game.
Down by a run late in the game, the Cubs came back with Jaryd Pollard drawing a walk, and then Matt Jarvis taking first after being hit by a pitch.
Executing a double steal, Pollard came home on a throwing error to third base to tie the score, and Jarvis took third. Jarvis then came home on a passed ball to give the Cubs the victory.
Cubs pitchers: Mitchell Pasek, Andrew Bueno, Kyle Kinsey
D-backs pitchers: Jim Hagan, John Forestieri, Kody Root

OVYSL U12 Girls Class III Fury 2, Peninsula Blaze (Foster City) 1
The Fury capped off the spring season with a 2-1 victory over the Peninsula Blaze in Foster City. Despite an early start time, the Fury were energized from the beginning. The first half featured a pressuring offensive attack as most of the play was on the Fury’s offensive side. Sweeper Emily Mandel and fullbacks, Mika Matsumoto, Gina Moreschini and Danielle Dukes beat back the Blaze offense with repeated stops. Goalie Brianna Canty snuffed out all Blaze first half shots. Off a throw-in, the ball was blocked by Aubrey Young, who passed the ball to Kelly Foster. Foster deftly passed to Melanie Menage, who blasted the ball high into right corner of the net for a Fury 1-0 lead. The Fury nearly had another goal near the end of the first half. Alyssa Gummow make an arching corner kick in front of the goal. Lauren (Jojo) Bertero jumped high, headed the ball which hit the top cross bar for a near score. The Blaze tied the score in the opening minutes of the second half. But with 10 minutes left, Anna Molyneux led Bertero with an in-stride pass. Bertero raced the ball from mid-field, eluding two Blaze defenders. Her score came from the right side, splicing the Blaze fullback and goalie with a booming kick to the left net for the winning goal and a Fury win.
