Dear Editor,

I would like to take the opportunity to thank Tony Burchyns and the Morgan Hill Times for the article on the Out of the Darkness Overnight walk. The topic of suicide is difficult. When newspapers like The Times provide coverage of suicide related topics it helps shatter the silence and promote discussion. Thank you for being part of helping to raise suicide awareness.

I would like to make one adjustment to the article. It is my belief that people can’t, not don’t, do much to prevent suicide given the tools currently available. It has been my experience that many people, caring individuals, doctors, teachers, professionals and organizations put enormous effort into trying to help prevent the devastation that surrounds a suicide. The number of suicides is rising each year and much needs to be accomplished to reverse this national health problem. This is the reason research remains so critical.

It was my privilege to witness Amy McGeever and Lizzy Ritty participate in their incredible journey from raising funds to reaching their goal of walking 20 miles in the darkness. I am humbled by their strength of character, fortitude and capabilities. Their shirts read “Take a Step Take a Stand Help Heal Hope.” And they did.
