Police searching for suspects in Friday’s robbery
Police are still looking for three Hispanic men, likely in their late teens or early 20s, who allegedly held the owner of Regalos Toluca at gunpoint while they stole nearly $10,000 from her business Friday afternoon.
Regalos Toluca, a check-cashing business and small market, only has been in business for 15 months according to the owner.
Police believe the intruders may have a connection with the store.
“They came in and they knew where the money was,” owner Erika Gonzalez said Friday afternoon, less than an hour after the robbery. “They told me to lie down on the floor, to lie face down.”
Gonzalez was not injured in the incident, which occurred at approximately 2pm in the Oak Glen shopping center at the corner of Wright Avenue and Monterey Road.
The suspects apparently fled on foot.
Police were still investigating the incident, Morgan Hill Police Cmdr. Joe Sampson said late Friday afternoon.
He said Sheriff’s Office bloodhounds didn’t find anything in a search of the area, and MHPD detectives will continue to canvass the neighborhood.
“They attempted to tie her up, but were somehow unsuccessful, and they made her lie down on the floor,” said Sampson. “While one guy waited outside, the other guy took the money from the cash drawer.”
Though the suspects have not been identified, Sampson said he thinks they may be local.
“My suspicions are that it’s someone from in town,” he said. “It seems to be someone with knowledge of when have they would have the maximum amount of money in the cash drawer, when they deposit, when more people cash checks. When someone robs a convenience store, they might get $200 to 300, not $9,000. This was definitely targeted and researched.”
At least one of the suspects might have been a former employee.
“Because of the amount of inside knowledge, we are looking into whether an employee was recently fired or quit,” Sampson said.
