this week in boys basketball, count Live Oak among the haves. The
Acorns (7-10, 4-3) ended the first half of league play tied for
fourth place and two games out of first after beating Del Mar 43-31
on Friday at Live Oak High School.

As the stretch run begins this week in boys basketball, count Live Oak among the haves. The Acorns (7-10, 4-3) ended the first half of league play tied for fourth place and two games out of first after beating Del Mar 43-31 on Friday at Live Oak High School.
The Acorns play five of their remaining seven games at LOHS, beginning at 7 p.m. Wednesday against Yerba Buena. The last time they met, Live Oak overcame a nine-point deficit in the fourth quarter to win 61-58. The Acorns can make up serious ground in upcoming games against winless San Jose and James Lick and 4-3 Mount Pleasant.
Friday the Acorns were led with eight points from Kalum Bergstrom and Luke Laguna and six from Jakob Conlan.
Laguna (8.6 points per game) is Live Oak’s second-leading scorer behind Austin Carvalho (8.8). Teammate Eddie Plascencia is third with 7.6 points.
- Sobrato’s return to the Mount Hamilton Division could be short-lived unless the Bulldogs turn it around during the second half of league play.
They sat 0-7 (2-15 overall) after Friday’s 56-33 loss to visiting Leland. Sobrato is in eighth place, though only two games behind seventh-place Willow Glen.
As rough as the first half of league play was, the Bulldogs’ Travis Saenz and Ben Vater finished fourth and fifth in scoring with 14.9 and 13.5 points, respectively. Vater was also third in blocks (1.4) and rebounds (8.5) per game.
They led Sobrato on Friday as Saenz went for 14 points, and Vater nine.
Girls soccer
Kate van Keulen’s first-half goal stood as the game-winner in Sobrato’s 1-0 victory over Willow Glen on Friday at the Outdoor Sports Center.
It was van Keulen’s third goal of the season.
Lauren Putney was credited with an assist for the Bulldogs, who improved to 4-4-4 and 2-2-2 in the Mount Hamilton Division.
