A false report of a handgun displayed on the road in downtown Morgan Hill led to a felony vehicle stop that snarled traffic Wednesday afternoon, police said.
Morgan Hill police responded to a call reporting a disturbance with weapons in the area of Nob Hill Terrace – just west of downtown – about 2:10 p.m. Wednesday, according to Morgan Hill police Sgt. Troy Hoefling.
A white Mazda was stopped at a stop sign near Nob Hill Terrace and Del Monte Avenue for a prolonged period of time. A gray Toyota Camry stopped behind the vehicle, blew the horn and then passed the Mazda, Hoefling said.
The driver of the Mazda told police that one of two males occupying the Camry displayed a handgun as the vehicle passed, Hoefling said.
The Mazda continued to follow the Toyota up Nob Hill Terrace. Police arrived to the area and initiated a high-risk stop on the Camry on the Third Street bridge on the west side of downtown Morgan Hill, Hoefling said.
“No gun was ever found, and (the suspects) declined ever having a gun,” Hoefling said.
The Santa Clara County Sheriff’s Office assisted in the vehicle stop, which reportedly brought traffic to a crawl through downtown for a couple of hours, according to residents who were downtown at the time.
