A man and woman from out of town were arrested for working together to cash fraudulent checks at Morgan Hill banks over the weekend, police said.
Police arrested the suspects – Monique Agnew, 41 of Oakland, and James Rosa, 28 of Roseville – after each of them attempted to pass a counterfeit check Saturday at two different banks, according to a press release from Detective Mindy Zen of the Morgan Hill Police.
The first incident happened at 4:54 p.m. at Chase Bank on 17599 Monterey Road, when officers were dispatched on reports of a female customer trying to cash a counterfeit check, police said.
Agnew was arrested and brought to the police station on Vineyard Boulevard for further investigation, Zen said. The suspect told officers that she had traveled to Morgan Hill with at least one other subject to pass counterfeit checks at different banks.
While Agnew was being interviewed, police were dispatched to Bank of America at 200 Cochrane Plaza on another report of someone attempting to cash a fake check, police said.
Officers arrived and were directed to a man later identified as Rosa standing in front of a teller, Zen said. The bank manager told police the check that Rosa was trying to cash was counterfeit.
Police determined the two suspects knew each other and were working together to cash fraudulent checks, according to Zen.
Agnew was booked on suspicion of forgery, burglary, possession of a forged check, forgery and conspiracy, police said. Rosa was booked on suspicion of three counts of forgery, burglary and conspiracy to obtain money by false pretenses.
