A fire destroyed much of a San Juan Bautista area house Saturday afternoon, while one of the two occupants was treated for smoke inhalation.

The fire started around 2 p.m. Saturday at a home in the 700 block of Olympia Avenue, said Calfire investigator Cliff Williams. When firefighters arrived, it had been fully involved.

The resident of the home, an 84-year-old woman, was there at the time with her caretaker. The female caretaker was conscious but was transported to a hospital with smoke inhalation, Williams said. Responders also transported the home’s resident to the hospital for observation.

The fire destroyed much of the home as it moved into the attic and laundry room, causing “quite a bit of structural damage,” Williams said.

Agencies responding included Calfire, San Benito County’s contracted Calfire unit, Hollister fire and San Juan Bautista fire.
