After last week’s nail-biting win over Willow Glen, things won’t get much easier for the Sobrato football team tonight, when it returns to the field against leaguepower Leland.

The Bulldogs’ second game in the BVAL’s Mount Hamilton Division begins at 7 p.m. at Leland High in San Jose.

The Chargers, coming off back-to-back wins over Christopher and Piedmont Hills, enter the game with a wide-spread rushing attack led by seniors Kenny Portera and Jack Pizzo. Overall, the Chargers (2-2) have used eight runners to combine for more than 1,000 yards on the ground, averaging more than seven yards per carry.

Portera leads the team with 522 yards and five touchdowns on 56 carries. Pizzo isn’t far behind with 354 yards and four touchdowns on 59 carries.

Sobrato (3-1) will need more of the same from Miguel Redmond who has rushed for 572 yards on 61 carries. Quarterback Michael Bocksnick also remains a threat for Sobrato with 305 yards and five touchdowns on the ground.

Through the air, Bocksnick has gone 25-for-52 for 553 yards and seven touchdowns, including last week’s 45-yard touchdown pass to Calvin Tipton in the final minute of play.

LIVE OAK

Live Oak is on the road for Game 2 of its Blossom Valley Athletic League Santa Teresa Division slate, facing Westmont tonight at 7 p.m.

Both squads come into the encounter from opposite ends of the spectrum. The Acorns (4-0 overall, 1-0 STAL), bulldozed Mt. Pleasant 42-0 in the league opener last week. The Warriors (1-3 overall, 0-1 STAL) had a little more than 200 yards of offense in a 21-6 loss to Lincoln in their initial league contest.

While Live Oak’s offense has, as expected, settled in, its defense has held two opponents to single digits this season, and none of the four so scored more than 21. The Acorns defense has forced 11 turnovers and tallied 10 sacks as a unit.
