Macy Hanson, 18

Where are you from, originally? Morgan Hill

What are your plans after high school? I will be attending Brigham Young University.

Favorite high school memory: One of my favorite high school memories occurred at the beginning of my senior year. As student body president, I organized an all-high school flash mob to perform at a spirit rally for the entire school. Along with a friend, I choreographed and taught the dance to the high school students; and then during the rally, we surprised the rest of the school with our flash mob rendition of “Kids” by MGMT. It was a fun, unifying experience for the entire high school, and I loved being part of it.

What was your biggest challenge in high school? Six years ago, I suffered an injury to my knee that has left me with constant pain. Throughout my high school years, I had three different surgeries, but I still continue to have the pain. When I first started high school, it was difficult to realize that I would not be able to participate in everything that I had previously wanted to do. I had to give up on dreams of playing soccer and dancing, but I learned to develop new goals such as leadership, service and drama, and I have learned patience and compassion. My motto in life has become, “Life isn’t about waiting for the storm to pass. It’s about learning how to dance in the rain!” I’ve learned to accept challenges as they come and love life, every minute of it.

Extracurriculars: Participation in High School Student Council, active participation in high school drama all four years, playing Millie in “Thoroughly Modern Millie,” Sandy in “Grease,” The Wardrobe in “Beauty and the Beast,” and Rusty in “Footloose,” treasurer and member of Interact Club, active and senior member of the Morgan Hill Youth Action Council, and member of a church-sponsored choir, Zion Youth Choir

What inspires you? My older sister, Cali, has always been a role model for me because of her enthusiasm and bright outlook on life. She doesn’t let anything stop her from achieving her goals, and yet she still has time to talk to me, give me advice, and sing along to Adele and show tunes with me.

What’s your dream career? My absolute dream career would be a starring actress on Broadway!

Favorite subject of study: Drama.
