The Central Coast Section football committee recently proposed changing its playoff system to require all teams applying for at-large berths to have an overall record of at least .500.
Valley Christian of San Jose beat Sobrato 52-42 in a CCS Division III semifinal this season on its way to the title. But the Warriors, who play in the vaunted West Catholic Athletic League, wouldn’t have made the postseason under the newly proposed format because they finished the regular season with a 4-6 record.
According to the committee’s season-ending report, the number of teams who reached the football postseason with losing records was an unintended product of the “A-plus” league classification index designation.
The proposal is yet to be approved by the section’s board of managers.
