Guest volunteer Chris Kennedy reads "The Day the Crayons Came Home" in Ms. Basile class at PA Walsh Elementary during the March 2 Read Across America Readin.

Morgan Hill Unified’s elementary school students welcomed special guest readers from throughout the community March 2 for the district’s fourth annual Read Across America Read-in event.
Board of Education trustees, Morgan Hill Police officers, City council members, local business leaders, MHUSD staffers and parents volunteered to read aloud book selections in each preschool through fifth grade classrooms.
The nationwide National Education Association event is a celebration of beloved children’s author Dr. Seuss’ birthday as well as an opportunity to promote literacy.
Book titles included “Giraffes Can’t Dance” by Giles Andreae, “The Day the Crayons Came Home” by Drew Daywalt and “The Junkyard Wonders” by Patricia Polacco as well as bilingual selections such “Gracias/Thanks” by Pat Mora and “Pele, King of Soccer/Pele, El rey del futbol” by Monica Brown.
District staff set up an online sign-up page for volunteers who were able to choose which school and grade level they wanted to read in.
Students were instructed to wear black and white March 2 and many of the school site staff as well as the guest readers dressed up in Dr. Seuss themed attire.
“Motivating children to read is an important factor in student achievement and creating lifelong successful readers,” according to the NEA. “Research has shown that children who are motivated and spend more time reading do better in school.”
