Morgan Hill – The Sobrato High football team routed James Lick 33-6 Friday on Senior Night at Live Oak.
The Bulldogs rushed for 226 yards and they totalled 315 yards of offense in the win.
Sophomore quarterback Alex Meldrum was 7 for 9 passing with 88 yards and two touchdown passes and added a 1-yard touchdown run 57 seconds into the game.
Sobrato running back Tony Zizzo rushed for 70 yards on 13 carries and junior running back Russ Tirey added 47 yards and a touchdown on 11 carries.
“I feel I played good,” Zizzo said. “We kept ourselves in the game. We told ourselves to keep playing hard.”
The Bulldog defense was led by junior Joseph Anaya, who had two interceptions, and junior linebacker Shane Kendall, who had three sacks on the evening.
Senior Bryan Yates had two catches for 43 yards and touchdown.
Sobrato head coach Dan Brown was pleased with Friday’s performance.
“The kids played hard,” Brown said. “We talked about playing whistle to whistle. We came after (Lick), right from the start. We’ve had trouble scoring early in games. But tonight we came out strong.”
Brown said that Lick’s efforts were not overlooked and to defeat them, the Bulldogs had to break them down mentally.
“To hang with (Lick), we had to put them away early,” Brown said. “We had to shake their confidence.”
Brown credited Friday’s win with having a high level of intensity.
“The kids were amped,” Brown said. “In this game, you have to play with a certain energy, a spirit. We had the intensity in us tonight.”
Senior running back Ramon Watkins was the Bulldog’s leading rusher with 80 yards on eight carries.
Senior defensive tackle Genaro Redmond scored a 2-yard rushing touchdown in his last home game.
Brown said the team dedicated Friday’s win to team senior captain Juvenal Rodriguez, who missed Friday’s game due to a suspension from a personal foul in last week’s loss to Willow Glen.
“We got together and played for Juvenal tonight,” Brown said. “He’s a leader. He’s the coach on the field. The seniors played for him tonight.”
The Bulldogs improved their overall record to 4-4-1 and their league record to 4-2.
They will travel to Overfelt in San Jose next Thursday to take on the Royals in their final regular season game.
Junior Varsity
Behind a six interception performance by the defense, the Sobrato junior varsity football team beat James Lick 26-7.
The defense now has 22 takeaways for the year.
Mark Borland had two rushing touchdowns and Dylan Glines had one score on the ground.
The Bulldogs improve to 8-1 on the season and 5-1 overall. If Sobrato beats Overfelt on Thursday, it will win the league title.
