Victory in Homestead Cup moves Sobrato to 2-0-1
Cupertino – The Sobrato boys soccer team improved to 2-0-1 with a 2-1 win over Gunn in the Homestead Cup on Saturday.
The Bulldogs jumped out to an early lead when Chris Sergent flipped the ball backward that he took himself and launched it into the goal.
The play was set up by a throw in by Shibin Tharayil to Murilo Almeida, who flipped the ball to Sergent.
Gunn responded several minutes later on a Sobrato defensive error.
A ball in the air was called for by goalie Trevor Newcomb, despite Victor Iracheta being in position to head the ball, said coach Ricardo Martinez.
Newcomb hit the ball to one of the Gunn players who made the goal to tie the game up at the break.
The game remained tied through 32 minutes of play in the second half.
“Both team created opportunities,” Martinez said. “We (just) created more than them.”
In the 33rd minute of the second half, Iracheta drew a foul following a pass from Almeida in the box and was awarded a penalty kick.
Iracheta converted the kick, which proved to be the game winner.
Martinez said the game could have gone the other way because of one of Gunn’s forwards, which forced him to change the defense around.
“This guy had crazy speed – he was really fast,” Martinez said. “I moved Chris Sergent to defense because of how fast this guy was.”
The move paid off for the Bulldogs who remain undefeated in regular season play.
Sobrato will continue in Homestead Cup play today when the team faces Lincoln.
