The Gilroy Police Foundation hosted its annual Tee Off For Youth golf tournament. This year it was held at CordeValle Championship Golf Course in San Martin. The Police Foundation earned the use of the course for the day by supplying security for the Women’s Open in early July.

Golfers were treated to a clinic by pro golfers Ron and Dave Stockton, Jr., who let rookies into the world of big money golf. Golfers included Amy, Jeff and Adam MacDonald. Adam is a member of the Aptos High School Golf Team and Jeff is an apple farmer for Martinelli’s Apple Cider of Watsonville. Maybe next year you’ll see Martinelli’s Apple Juice in the box lunches.

Funds raised at the event will go to the Youth Task Force and many other programs the Police Foundation supports to keep youth out of gangs and on the right path.

I volunteered to suit up and use the Hurst Tool (aka Jaws of Life) with engineer Mike Botill, acting Fire Captain Steven Hayes and Firefighter Paramedic Casey Main, as we cut off the door to rescue our instructor Trevor.

The group’s project is to get more Automated External Defibrillators (A.E.D.) in town and more training for the life-saving devices. You can support it by attending the HEARTSafe 5K on Saturday, Aug. 20 from 8 to 11:30 a.m. Gilroy Sports Park at 5925 Monterey Frontage Road. Firefighters will teach hands only CPR and AED use.
