Without an incumbent running for the Morgan Hill City Treasurer’s office, the deadline to submit nomination qualifying paperwork is extended to Wednesday, Aug. 17, according to election officials.

Incumbent Mike Roorda announced in a July 22 letter to the Times that he will not be seeking re-election in November. “It has been a unique opportunity for me to serve the community while having professional experiences that were outside of my private sector employment and for me to meet many of you, plus elected officials and city staff, whom I may not have otherwise met,” Roorda’s letter read, in part.

Roorda has been Morgan Hill’s City Treasurer since he was first elected in a 1997 special election.

The city treasurer serves a four-year term and is responsible for managing the city’s public funds and investment portfolio, compiling monthly finance reports for the city council, collecting taxes and license fees, among other financial duties. The official is permitted by state law to appoint city staff members to carry out these duties.

In Morgan Hill, the city treasurer is paid a $200 monthly salary, and is eligible for health benefits if he or she is enrolled in the CalPERS retirement system, according to City Clerk Irma Torrez. The office holder can also be reimbursed for out-of-pocket expenses for city business related travel, conferences and other meetings.

As of noon Aug. 15, no other potential candidates have pulled or filed paperwork to qualify to run for City Treasurer on the Nov. 8 ballot. Other city offices up for grabs on that ballot are two council seats, the mayor’s office and the city clerk’s office.
Anyone interested in running for city treasurer has until 5 p.m. Aug. 17 to file paperwork at the city clerk’s office, which is located at 17575 Peak Ave. For more information, call City Clerk Irma Torrez at (408) 779-7259.
