Guest reader Jim Carrillo, the director of technology for the Morgan Hill Unified School District, dressed as Dr. Seuss’ “The Cat in the Hat” character as he read to P.A. Walsh Elementary School students during the second annual Read Across America “Read-in” event, held March 2 at elementary schools across the district.
“Over at Walsh, a lot of teachers were dressed up. The kids were so excited to see them and the cafeteria had green eggs and ham,” said guest reader Ann Horner, a longstanding community volunteer. “It was really a grand day.”
The annual event is a celebration of Dr. Seuss’ birthday.
Horner read the bilingual story “A Treasury of Curious George” for the preschool group at P.A. Walsh, as other special guests from throughout the community read different selections to each pre-K to third-grade class. Volunteers choose the school and grade level they would like to visit and MHUSD supplied them with a book to read—in either English or Spanish—to the class. The books were donated to that school’s library.
“We had such a great time, and we got to make wishes of our own afterward because we realized you don’t have to have a birthday to make a wish,” said Horner, who took turns with the kids making a wish and blowing out a candle. “The kids were adorable.”
