Accused sex offender and hit and run suspect Alejandro R. Cortez appeared in court today for a plea hearing, but the case was delayed until May 5.

Cortez, 21, was arrested March 18 in connection with the rape of a 12-year-old girl, police said. The investigation into Cortez began in early March when the girl, now 14, told Morgan Hill police that he raped her two years ago.

He was arrested as he attempted to climb out the back window of his home in Gilroy.

During the investigation it was also discovered that Cortez was also involved in a hit and run that was reported Jan. 25, 2008. He was also on active probation for assault with a deadly weapon.

Cortez is charged with four counts of lewd or lascivious acts on a child younger than 14 and one count of hit and run causing property damage.

He is in custody at Santa Clara County Jail in lieu of $500,000 bail.
