Lady Acorns upset Presentation, move to 2-2 in league
SAN JOSE — In the wake of a 3-1 league victory over Oak Grove, the Live Oak softball team stayed hot with impressive wins over two prestigious programs Saturday in the Mission City tournament.
The Lady Acorns (4-7 overall) upended Milpitas 4-2 and blanked Presentation 7-0. Presentation played for the CIF-Central Coast Section Division II championship a year ago.
Against Milpitas (3-11), which reached the Division II playoffs in 2008, Live Oak scored two runs in the third and seventh innings. Kayla Cisneroz and Kirsten Doting homered for the Acorns, with Cisneroz adding a double. Freshman Katie Obbema got the victory.
Live Oak jumped on Presentation (16-2-1) early, scoring three runs in the second and four in the third. The Acorns built a 7-4 edge in hits, including another round-tripper by Cisneroz. Hailey Nelson added two hits, and Sam Bejarano earned the decision.
Live Oak moved to 2-2 in Mount Hamilton Division Friday with its win over Oak Grove (1-7-1, 0-2).
Cisneroz came through with another big performance, clubbing two of the Acorns’ five hits, including a double. Acorns starting pitcher Kelly Hillman improved to 2-2.
Larson’s HR wins it
Katie Machado pitched a complete and had a timely hit in the last inning, and Nicole Larson cranked a game-winning home run as Sobrato beat Oak Grove 3-2 Saturday at the Mission City tournament in San Jose.
Larson also scored in the first inning after tripling off Eagles ace Savanna Bernardo. Larson advanced home on a throwing error.
For Sobrato (3-9 overall, 1-2 Santa Teresa Division), the big win followed back-to-back losses Friday to Aragon — 9-5 — and Wilcox — 6-0, both ‘A’ level teams.
“I was pleased that the girls bounced back after Friday night’s losses,” Bulldogs coach Bob Clampett said in a statement. “I was pleased with the effort against Aragon. The score was tied 1-1 going into the fifth inning. We made a couple of mistakes, and when you do that against good teams, they score runs.”
Sobrato completed a grueling stretch of six games in five days.
“I’m proud of the effort and commitment that the girls showed,” Clampett added.
