Randy Pinkston returns as Sobrato wins 4-3 Thursday
SAN JOSE — With 2008 West Valley Division singles champ Randy Pinkston back in the lineup, Sobrato nipped Independence 4-3 Thursday at Sobrato High School, handing the first-place 76ers their first defeat in Santa Teresa Division play.
Playing in the No. 2 spot, Pinkston defeated Oscar Diec 6-3, 6-1 as the Bulldogs went 3 for 4 in singles matches. Sobrato’s top single, Ronnie Pollard, defeated Khoa Do 6-0, 6-2, and Tyler Pecsok downed Independence’s Billy Salvador 6-3, 6-3. Zach Thomas came close to securing the win for Sobrato (6-4 league), but lost in three sets to Rudy Abitago, 6-4, 7-6, 6-4.
The Bulldogs’ No. 3 pair of Chris Holmes and Mitch Schenkelberg clinched it by winning their match 5-7, 7-6, 6-4.
The 76ers dropped to 9-1.
Sobrato will play Branham on the road at 3:15 p.m. Tuesday.
