Morgan Hill All-Stars set to play in Game 1 of San Jose Section
finals tonight
SAN JOSE — In beating Fremont 6-4 Wednesday, the Morgan Hill Bronco 11 Green All-Stars got much more than revenge. They became their city’s first team to advance to regionals this summer.
Strangley enough, few of them knew the stakes were so high.
“I tried to keep that a secret,” Morgan Hill manager Mark Dean said. “But thanks to modern technology, a few of them found out.”
Morgan Hill will play in the San Pablo Regional beginning July 16.
On top of extending their postseason, the Green All-Stars also earned another shot at payback — this time against the team that knocked them out of the hunt for regionals a year ago.
Morgan Hill will return to Herman School tonight to play undefeated Blossom Valley in Game 1 of the San Jose Section Tournament finals at 5:30 p.m. A second game, if necessary, is slated for the same time Friday.
“The guys are still very hungry,” Dean said. “They remember how last year ended; how they beat us 10-0. We’re a pretty loose group. They’ll be ready to play.”
After trailing 4-3 to Fremont, the club that sent them into the loser’s bracket Sunday, the Green All-Stars went ahead for good with three runs in the sixth.
From there, Morgan Hill pitcher Ryan Quadros closed it out. Green also received tremendous defensive help from second baseman Justin Sanders, who turned a key double play in the sixth inning.
Evan Dean, Anthony Saso and Adam Jennings each batted 2 for 4 for Morgan Hill.
