Talking about Towers
“My children and I have a question regarding the water tower at Paramit Industries on the corner of Monterey and Madrone. Is that a real water tower? Do they still use it? Did they use it once before? Why did they keep it?”
Red Phone:
After the Madrone Business Park came in, the water tower is one of the few remnants of the rustic farm life of the past.
Before Madrone became part of Morgan Hill in 1958, the tower was the major supplier of water to the Madrone area. Although it hasn’t pumped water for about 40 or 50 years after the county pulled the casing out and plugged the well, the tower still remains an icon on the northern end of town.
“Ever since I’ve been a kid I’ve always loved water towers,” said Bill Miner, owner of California Tow & Salvage across the street. “It is a geographical landmark. It can be seen for miles Why would they take something like that down? It’s something neat to look at.”
Over the years Miner, maintained the tower and the surrounding area, painting and weeding it when necessary.
Miner, who has owned the property for about 35 years, said he asked the city of Morgan Hill if it wanted to have a ‘Welcome to Morgan Hill’ sign on the tower in lights, but they weren’t interested because the city already has a sign on Burnett Avenue.
I Want My Four Quarters
“I tried to get a newspaper on Dunne between the Longs and Safeway store. I tried twice and it wouldn’t open so I lost a dollar. So I went to Third Street to get a paper. So I’d like to know how I can be reimbursed.”
