Live Oak fell to 0-2 in nonleague play.

Kunze sisters return
– just in time for league
MORGAN HILL — The postmortem for Sobrato’s nonleague season would say the rich got richer.

Just when you thought things could not get better for the young and talented Lady Bulldogs, the team welcomed back its leading scorer from a year ago — and her twin sister.

Shealyn Kunze, who averaged a team-high 14 points per game during the 2007-08 season, and Katelyn Kunze will dress Wednesday when Sobrato hosts its Blossom Valley Athletic League-Mount Hamilton Division opener against Santa Teresa at 7 p.m.

The Kunzes, both juniors, missed the preseason for personal reasons.

Shealyn’s return completes the Bulldogs’ starting five from last year, when the team finished a program-best 23-5. Katelyn didn’t play for that squad, but played sparingly as a freshman the year before.

“Everyone’s ready to go,” Sobrato first-year coach Natalie Bobuk said. “We’re excited to finally start league and put it all together. We’re going to be pretty solid.”

The Bulldogs (7-3 overall) highlighted their nonleague slate with an impressive run in the Seaside Sweet 16 tournament last week. They bounced back from an opening loss to Scotts Valley with wins against Shafter and North Monterey County.

Sobrato, which had not played in more than two weeks prior to the Sweet 16, lost 55-47 to Aptos in the consolation championship game.

“You could tell we hadn’t played in a while in that first game,” Bobuk said. “We came out slow; not really ready to play. We should have won. We had some good games that followed.

“It was a really fun tournament. We had some good games and learned a lot about ourselves.”

Against Santa Teresa (6-4), the Bulldogs will be trying for their fifth victory in as many games at Sobrato Gym this year. The Bulldogs might be without starting point guard Melissa Cachopo, who suffered a concussion during a game at Seaside. Cachopo leads the team in points (9.9) and assists (3.7).

Bobuk said she might have swingman Courtney Sedlak run the point Wednesday.

“Courtney’s played there a few times and she’s been doing well,” Bobuk added.
