A 75-year-old San Martin man was flown to the hospital with severe injuries after being struck by a pickup truck on Monterey Road Monday night, according to police.
At 6:10 p.m. California Highway Patrol officers responded to the accident, which happened in San Martin, south of Roosevelt Avenue, CHP Officer Erica Elias said.
William Flodberg was walking east as he was crossing Monterey Road. When he started to cross the northbound lane he stepped in front of a Chevrolet pickup truck, whose driver was unable to stop or turn in time to avoid hitting the pedestrian.
The truck, driven by Raul Reyes of Morgan Hill, stopped at the scene, Elias said.
According to the CHP collision report, witnesses who were driving by when the accident occurred also stopped to assist the victim and officers.
One of those witnesses was Brad Hamilton, a former police officer, who said when he stopped, Flodberg was lying face down in a pool of his own blood and was not moving. Worried that he may be unable to breathe, Hamilton said he moved Flodberg’s head to the side just enough to establish an airway. He said Flodberg was conscious when paramedics arrived.
Flodberg was flown to Santa Clara Valley Medical Center. Elias said he was alive when paramedics arrived at the scene, and his injuries consisted of “major head and torso trauma.”
The collision report also states that another witness, who was traveling southbound in an automobile, saw the pedestrian walking through the center median when he approached. That witness slowed down and watched Flodberg step into the northbound lane as he got hit by the oncoming truck.
The truck that hit Flodberg was reportedly traveling about 35 miles per hour when the collision occurred.
Elias noted that drugs or alcohol were not a factor in the accident, and currently no criminal charges are being sought. She said the CHP is still investigating the accident.
