THIS WEEK’S QUESTION:
“Do you agree with President Barack Obama’s offer to Russia to drop U.S. plans for a European missile defense system in return for Moscow ceasing to assist Iran in building long range nuclear weapons?” Yes: 8 No: 2
? Karen Anderson: “Do we really know the deal? Or will we learn it in 50 years as we did with the Cuban Missile Crisis?”
? Bert Berson: “Yes. At last, sensible diplomacy. P.S. The missile system does not work.”
? Chris Bryant: “Yes, better to head off weapon escalation rather than promoting it.”
? Dennis Kennedy: “Yes! The missile defense system seems to bring the world closer to a nuclear holocaust than without it.”
? Julian Mancias: “Yes. It would probably cost the American taxpayer too much money. Anyway, I am not so sure that the EU wants our weapons on their soil. Maybe Russia can help keep Iran in check.”
? Henry Miller: “No matter how hard I try, I can’t imagine a better quid pro quo.”
? Lisa Pampuch: “Yes. This kind of negotiation is the essence of diplomacy and is far preferable to resorting to military action, which should only be used as a last resort.”
? John Quick: “Yes. It seems like we finally have a President who can act intelligently from our position of power, following Teddy Roosevelt’s method ‘Talk softly and carry a big stick.’ This is an offer. We have given up nothing but the arrogance of the Bush Administration. Talking gets more done with less harm to our economy and the world than the deployment of weapons.”
? Emily Shem-Tov: “While I think that it is good that active diplomacy is being pursued, I do not think it will help deter Iran.”
? Steve Staloch: “Yes. It demonstrates a renewed sense of American global leadership and a refreshing change in diplomacy through reasonable compromise rather than reckless intimidation.”
