MORGAN HILL — The Live Oak badminton team shook off an opening nonleague loss to beat San Jose 9-6 Thursday in its first West Valley Division match of the season.

Having to forfeit two matches, the Acorns (1-1 overall) rose to the occasion.

Live Oak took 2 of 3 in boys singles, including Johann Abordo’s 15-10, 15-10 victory in the top match. Teammate Emily Mandel, who was moved up to the No. 1 in place of the injured Sara Ann Garber, also won 15-3, 15-12. Both Acorns remain unbeaten this year.

Live Oak swept the boys doubles category, as Addien Wray and Peter Mains won 15-7, 15-1; and Alvin To and Miguel Mahany rallied to a three-set victory, 4-15, 15-10, 15-5.

The Acorns’ mixed pairs fared just as well. Qilan Zhou and Aubree Garber won 15-5, 15-3; Shahrooz Bastami and Alexandra Muniz rolled 15-4, 15-3; and Steven Nonnenmacher and Katie Fernandez won in three sets, 15-6, 12-15, 15-10.

The Acorns’ girls pairs also dominated. Jessica Liang and Ada Tan held on to win 15-8, 10-15, 17-14; and Kristen Pitsenbarger and Sayuri ran away 15-12, 15-5.

Facing a much stronger team in Archbishop Mitty, Live Oak dropped its first game 12-3.

For the Acorns, Abordo and Owen Frederick were winners in boys singles, 15-4, 15-8 and 15-9, 15-4, respectively, and Mandel won 15-10, 15-0.
