Boys, girls cross country teams qualify for section finals
GILROY — The Britton Middle School boys cross country team went into league finals at Christmas Hill Park in Gilroy on Thursday with a strong team and in good position to place first.
Having several successful meets under their belt, the well-prepared Bobcats made a swift run to the team championship. Out in front of the pack, they powered through the roughly 2-mile course that runs through the hillside of the park with teams including Brownell, Solorsano, Martin Murphy, and Bernal Middle schools.
Leading the way for the eighth-grade boys team and placing first overall was Britton’s Kyle Alexander, followed closely by teammate Kalum Bergstrom who took second place. It was a tight race to the finish. Matthew Hanlon crossed in fifth, James Gabbard in seventh and Tanner Hallinan 24th for the Bobcats. Another Britton top runner, Troy Scheufflele, led the way, running with the ‘C’ team for finals. He finished second.
The eighth-grade girls also had a great race, qualifying for section finals with a third-place finish. It was an exciting meet loaded with Morgan Hill fans, including members of the Sobrato cross country team.
Three teams will represent Britton on Wednesday at Christmas Hill Park for sectionals.
