You probably think I am talking about your drive. And most of you would agree that short and straight beats long and crooked all the time.

What I am really talking about is your lead arm. Most of us will watch the U.S. Open this weekend and be in awe of how far the pros hit the ball. We will go to the course on Monday and try to replicate the torque and power of their swings. But remember this, most of us are not as limber and can’t swing as long as they can. You are much better off swinging to the point where you can keep your left arm straight and not bend it. When you bend that left arm, trying to get extra distance, it makes it very hard to hit the ball solid because you have to straighten it at the precise moment of impact.

So, when I talk about short and straight, make sure your backswing is short enough to keep your arm straight. Look at yourself in a mirror and practice your backswing. Look for the point where your arms starts to break — this is where you should stop. The result will be straighter and more solid shots.
