More than 500 skaters and skateboard supporters attended the long-awaited grand opening of the Morgan Hill Skate Park at the Centennial Recreation Center on Saturday. Braving the 100-degree heat were famed skater Steve Caballero, FOX BMX team, Mayor Steve Tate and Councilman Greg Sellers. The $600,000 park is designed like a plaza with stairs and a faux planter box designed specifically for skating. The intention is to deter skateboarders from using actual city plazas for their jumps and slides.
The event was held in conjunction with the annual Roofless teen concert event.
The park will be open from 8 a.m. to sunset. Safety equipment – helmet, knee pads and elbow pads – is required, as is adult supervision for youth under 12 years old.
