Hollister police briefs: Helicopter hits power line, causes power outage

I’m calling because I have a concern. On Monterey Highway on the
north end of town at the stoplight at Tilton Avenue, they have
reconstructed the asphalt surface there and raised it. But it seems
like once they re-did these traffic lights at night when you pull
up to make a left on Tilton heading northbound, once you trigger
the light it actually activates the other side of traffic to go
through before it allows you to. I was wondering if that could be
fixed?

I was wondering if that could be fixed?”

Dear Wondering, Red Phone contacted David Gittleson, associate engineer with the city. He said the city put the traffic signal at Monterey and Tilton in “recall” mode, (which is based on a timing sequence and does not use the detector loops).

“This was done in order to keep the traffic signal operational while we corrected the grades and repaved the intersection,” he said. “In addition, the city is currently installing a new traffic signal to replace the old one. The new traffic signal is scheduled to be complete within a few weeks and will be using the new detector loops that are currently visible. At that time, the signal will operate upon demand mode as normal.

So good caller, the city and Red Phone thank you for your patience.

MH Wal-Mart not like Gilroy’s

“As a neighbor living off of Cochrane Road, I really feel that the old Target should be a real grocery store. Is the Wal-Mart going to have a grocery store like the Gilroy Wal-Mart? If it’s anything like Gilroy, I just can’t imagine that the old Target is big enough to be a Wal-Mart, and how the parking lot will be big enough? Are they expanding the building and parking lot somehow?”

Dear Targeted, Red Phone contacted Garrett Toy, Business Assistance and Housing Services director, who said the Wal-Mart that will occupy the former Target space will use about 25,000 to 30,000 square feet of the 80,000 total for groceries.

“In comparison, the Super Wal-Mart in Gilroy is about 220,000 square feet, or almost three times as big as the Morgan Hill location,” he said. “The new Wal-Mart in Morgan Hill is a different prototype of a store. It is on a much smaller scale and will have different merchandising such as no discount alleys (i.e., pallets in the middle of aisles) and the interior look and feel will be different than a Super Wal-Mart. The building is not expanding, so the parking will be sufficient to accommodate Wal-Mart.”

Hope that helps good caller and that you can find the groceries you want there.

City needs to get the message out

“Hi Red Phone, it is the return of the subject that won’t go away; the bumps. I know 25 mph is the right speed. Red Phone knows that 25 mph is the right speed. The problem is no one else seems to know. I saw a Santa Clara County Sheriff slow to a near stop to pass over the bumps. The city has done a poor job communicating just what the appropriate speed should be. I suggest the city look into some sort of public awareness campaign. Thanks.”

Dear Bumped, consider your suggestion passed along.
