MORGAN HILL — The curtain goes up today for local prep hoopsters, as the 2009-10 basketball season opens for both Live Oak teams and the Sobrato girls.

Brett Paolucci’s much-anticipated second coaching tenure at Live Oak begins at 7 p.m., when the Acorns and Scotts Valley tip off in the Live Oak Gym. The Acorns are coming off of a third straight losing season — 7-18 — which led to the firing of first-year coach Vince Pacheco.

Meanwhile, Natalie Bobuk’s Lady Bulldogs open nonleague play at 7 p.m. against Presentation in San Jose. The Sobrato girls made a return trip to the second round of the Central Coast Section playoffs last winter.

They have a showdown Dec. 8 against coach Jeff Perkins’ Live Oak Lady Acorns, who tip off against Monte Vista Christian at 6:30 p.m. in Watsonville. Live Oak, which recorded a single win a year ago, hosts the Lady Bulldogs at 7.

The Sobrato boys team, now under first-year coach Lee Washington, starts its season with a tournament game against host Oak Grove at 7 p.m. Friday.

The Bulldogs’ 2008-09 campaign ended in the first round of sectionals.

NOTE: The Morgan Hill Times will preview each local team in the coming issues.
