Each month, the principals of Live Oak and Sobrato High Schools choose a total of four students (two from each school) to spotlight. Live Oak senior Jocelyn Mendoza, 17 is this week’s Student of the Week.

What inspires you? What inspires me the most is my family. I have two hard working parents who have always encouraged me to do well in school and try my hardest in everything I do. Basketball also inspires me because I know that I need good grades to play in high school and after high school.

Favorite subject in school: My favorite subject in school is English. I like reading and writing because it’s a way to express feelings and emotion. There is so much that can be learned from books and I find that amazing.

If you had the power to change one thing in the world: It would be to eliminate all sorts of stereotypes. No one will ever be judged because of their beliefs, sex or ethnicity. Everyone will be equal and no one would not be treated differently.

Name one big challenge in your life right now: A big challenge in my life right now is trying not to get distracted from my school work because summer is coming. I need to focus on the present time and not the future.

What is your dream job? My dream job would be becoming a probation officer to help troubled teens and hopefully help them succeed in life.

If you were stuck on a deserted island, what three things could you not live without? If I was stuck on a deserted island, three things that I would not be able to live without is a good book, an iPod and a basketball. If I was stuck on the island for a long time, I would eventually build a basketball court.

Favorite book: My favorite book is “Freak the Mighty” by Rodman Philbrick.

Plans post high school: My plans after high school would be going to a 4-year university or a junior college where I will hopefully have the opportunity to continue playing basketball.

Something that makes you smile: Something that makes me smile is basketball. My teammates are like my second family and winning an important game can put the biggest smile on my face.
