Robert Guerrero has a note in the upper-right corner of his Twitter feed that lists Floyd Mayweather Jr. as 43-1.

The Gilroy boxer has long expressed confidence for his May 4 bout against Mayweather, but he knows handing the pound-for-pound king the first loss of his professional career won’t be easy.

“You’ve got to be ready to do everything in there with Floyd,” Guerrero told Showtime on Tuesday during his media day in Las Vegas. “People say you need an A-B-C game plan. With Floyd, you need an ‘A’ to ‘Z’ game plan. You’ve got to be ready to make adjustments. Our game plan is to go out there and be 100 percent ready.”

Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs) will face Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) for Mayweather’s WBC welterweight title May 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, where both fighters are currently training. The fight will be televised on Showtime Pay Per View.

Guerrero said he was late to his media day because he was undergoing random USADA drug testing Tuesday. Though the born-and-raised Gilroyan interim WBC welterweight champion was mostly mum on his recent arrest on gun charges, he had plenty to say on the fight while Showtime cameras were rolling. Guerrero said he feels capable of challenging Mayweather in a way other southpaws have not.

“When Floyd makes those adjustments, he just leaves most fighters behind,” Guerrero told Showtime. “You’ve got to be able to make adjustments in the ring.”

Guerrero hasn’t responded to phone calls, messages or texts since being arrested March 28 on gun charges at John F. Kennedy International Airport in New York.

Though Guerrero declined to discuss his gun charges at his media day, he issued a statement through Team Guerrero publicist Mario Serrano to media in Las Vegas on Tuesday.

“I do want all of you to know how sorry I am that the event took place and that I plan to address it directly and honestly upon my return to New York,” the statement read, according to the Las Vegas Review-Journal. “I respect the laws of this country, and I take my commitment to my community and my country seriously.

“I never had any intent to do wrong. On the contrary, I did everything I knew to do to act in a safe, legal fashion. I cooperated with everyone involved. My mistake was in not knowing the laws are different in different states, but at all times I sought to be in total compliance in every way with what I thought was the law. The district attorney’s office is full of good people, and I am confident that this matter will be resolved fairly.

“This is an important lesson for me, one I wish I didn’t have to learn but one that I will teach my children and I will always remember.”

Guerrero was arraigned later March 28 on a four-count criminal complaint charging him with one count of criminal possession of a firearm and three counts of third-degree criminal possession of a weapon, according to the Queens County District Attorney’s office. One day after celebrating his 30th birthday, Guerrero had been arrested and charged with illegally traveling with an unloaded pistol and three unloaded high-capacity bullet magazines.

The weapon, a Smith & Wesson .40-caliber gun, is registered to Guerrero in California, according to Kevin Ryan, director of communications for the Queens County District Attorney’s office. However, the gun is not registered in New York, which is among the toughest states in the country on gun laws. Guerrero could face up to seven years in prison if convicted, according to the Queens County District Attorney’s office.

Guerrero’s court date is May 14.

Golden Boy Promotions CEO Richard Schaefer told the Dispatch on April 2 that Guerrero traveled with the gun because the Gilroy fighter meant to use it at a Las Vegas shooting range as a hobby.

Serrano has repeatedly told the Dispatch that Guerrero has been advised by his legal team to not discuss the gun charges.
