The South Valley will be well represented at Friday’s Central Coast Section track and field championship at Gilroy High.
San Benito, Christopher, Gilroy, Sobrato and Live Oak combined to send 11 individuals into 13 events for Saturday’s finals. The Christopher girls 4×400 relay team also qualified for a spot in the finals, which being at 4 p.m. at Gilroy High.
San Benito led he way with four individual qualifiers, including Christopher Cook who will participate in the long jump and high jump. Cook will be among the top qualifiers in the high jump, after leading the way in qualifying with a jump of 6-02.
Vanessa Estrada will run in the 3200 meters. Estrada qualified sixth overall with a time of 11:05.45. Steven Velarde will run in the 1600, after qualifying 10th with a time of 4:25.95. And Erik Rivera will throw in the discus after recording the fifth longest distance at 48-03.
Christopher will also compete in five different events. Ally Foster will enter the 100 meter hurdles after qualifying with a time of 15.70. She will also compete in the triple jump.
The Cougars’ Amira Barnett will compete in the 300 meter hurdles. She finished with a fifth best time of 45.69. Bryan Pipkin will compete in the pole vault for the Cougars, after qualifying at 13-00.
Gilroy will be represented by Samantha Una Dia in the 100-meter hurdles after qualifying with a time of 15.93. Ian Morlang will compete in the shot put.
Sobrato and Live Oak will each be represented by one athlete. Ryan Corvese will run for the Bulldogs in the 3200 meters. He qualified second with a time of 9:20.73.
Live Oak’s Fa Saulala finished with the best qualifying throw in the discus (127-03) and will represent the Acorns.
