CALLER 1: Hi, I’m reading (last) Friday’s Morgan Hill Times sports and the Green Phone issue Caller 1 that talked about JV sports not getting any coverage. I’m glad to see that because he just beat me to the punch. I’m another parent of a JV football player at Sobrato in this case. I do understand your answer as well and know that JV sports is not going to get the kind of coverage that varsity sports are getting. But I would recommend that even in the write-ups that you have been doing on the Acorns and the Sobrato Bulldogs that you just put one paragraph or one sentence comment about how the JV team did.

The Sobrato JV team has won their first (four) games. I know that there was a one line or so comment about their game against Seaside as part of the overall article that focused on the varsity – and that’s appropriate. But I think that there should be at least some mention and getting that statistic is not going to be a great deal of workload, I don’t believe. I just think there should be some mention of it and I am encouraged to see your plans about the JV Corner and some other opportunities to get a little focus there. Thank you.

GREEN PHONE: Thanks for the thoughts and your understanding, Caller 1. I’m sure you noticed our inclusion of the JV game in Tuesday’s coverage. We’ve also added all JV sports to our new “Coming up” schedule of games that will regularly appear on page B2. We further encourage all JV coaches to report any results of games to us by visiting www.morganhilltimes.com and clicking on the link on the right side of the page. We can’t always make it out to the field or court in time to catch some of the JV game, so any help that you can provide is appreciated. Our online sports submission form allows to report results and even include a picture if you have one. So if your team isn’t getting coverage and you want some, please utilize this tool.

CALLER 2: I love watching the kids play football at Live Oak. The community really supports the team. Thanks everyone! Go Acorns!

However, I have one question. Are they ever going to upgrade the football bleachers at Live Oak? Not only does the football field have potholes (just watch the kids slip and trip during the games), but the wood on the stairs is old and bounces. I am concerned that it is going to break. I would hate to see someone injured. Also, there is no railing for the older folks, I have watched a few falls and the handicap access is not the greatest.

Are there any plans to upgrade the stadium? Even Sobrato uses our stadium.

GREEN PHONE: The Green Phone contacted Live Oak athletic director Mark Cummins, who said he isn’t aware of any current plans for upgrades.

“At this point, there’s no money in the budget to upgrade the facilities,” Cummins said.

Cummins said there were talks five years ago when the all-weather track was installed at the field, but there wasn’t enough funding to complete further upgrades.

“Maintainance does try to stay on top of things when they’re aware of things that are unsafe,” Cummins added.

While Cummins said nothing is currently on the horizon, he does hope upgrades to the field and bleachers can be part of the school’s future plans.

“Obviously, we’d like to see that upgraded,” he said. “Hopefully we can get something done soon.”
