Local football players closed the book on their high school careers Wednesday, competing in the annual Charlie Wedemeyer All Star Football game.
The north team — made up of players from schools along the northern part of Santa Clara County — defeated the southern team — which included Live Oak, Sobrato, Gilroy and Christopher —17-6.
The game may have been an All-Star game, but it was not taken lightly by either side. The hits were vicious at times and the two sides became as chippy as a regular season contest.
But in the end, both sides came together sharing high-fives and photos.
It was the final time in a high school uniform for the seniors who will be suiting up for colleges across the country.
North struck first with a two-play scoring drive in its first offensive series. Michael Lauck of St. Francis connected with Roland Luke for a 40-yard touchdown pass.
The North made it 10-0 with a 26-yard field goal in the waning minutes of the first quarter.
South’s defense held its own for much of the remaining second half, led by Live Oak’s Brandon Duran with Jerardo Caro, Joey Rodguez, Mark Butterworth and Isaiah Hardy.
Sobrato’s Miguel Redmond also took some snaps at running back with Gilroy’s Gianfranco Fortino and Brendan Holler battling along side him on offense with Christopher’s Tyler DeCarlo manning the line.
North broke through at the end of the first, with De’Antay Williams catching a four-yard pass to put the team up 17-0.
South’s head coach Mike Gemo — the skipper at Live Oak — challenged his team to come out with more fire than the North.
The defense responded with a second-half shutout, including seeing Duran coming away with a pick.
The offense continued to be stymied by the North’s defense until the end of the game.
South got on the board driving 96 yards on 23 plays, as Pioneer’s Dominic Barnes caught a four-yard pass to spoil the shutout with 10 seconds to play.
