Specialized Bicycle Components
Location: 15130 Concord Circle

Founder and President: Mike Sinyard

History: Specialized Bicycle Components founder and president Mike Sinyard started the company 33 years ago with three things in mind – a passion for riding, an entrepreneurial spirit and a close partnership with independent bicycle dealers. Sinyard, a young hard-core bike junkie fresh out of San Jose State University in 1974, followed his bliss on a bicycle tour across Europe. To fund his trip, Sinyard sold his VW van, his only possession of value other than his bike. While in Europe, he met a woman with connections to a highly regarded bicycle component maker, Cino Cinelli. Sinyard convinced his new connection to arrange a meeting with Cinelli and the rest is history. Cinelli let him import Cinelli components into the United States. He spent his remaining $1,500 to buy Cinelli Components that he sold in the Bay Area to bicycle dealers. Today Specialized has grown up and branched out, developing its own brand of bikes, equipment, clothing and optics.

Philosophy: Specialized Bicycle Components’ foundation is built upon three pillars: A passion for riding, an entrepreneurial spirit, and partnership with independent bicycle retailers. The founding principle, a focus on the rider’s need for functional and technically advanced products that provide a performance benefit, holds more true today than any other time in the company’s history. The company also realizes that as a good corporate citizen, it must promote and support positive change on a variety of levels – as a result, Specialized is committed and involved in a variety of local, state and national advocacy programs.
