The Live Oak volleyball team closed out the season going 1-1 this past week, including a big win on senior night.
The Acorns wrapped up a tough year by going 2-12 in BVAL play.
On senior night, Live Oak defeated Santa Teresa to end its home schedule with a 3-2 win.
The Acorns captured the first two sets 25-21, 25-18 before the Saints got back into things with 25-23, 25-15 wins in Games 3 and 4, respectively. Live Oak then found its footing in Game 5 to shut down Santa Teresa’s comeback with a 15-6 win.
“It was just awesome for our seniors to go out on senior night with a win,” said coach Laura Coleman.
All the seniors got a chance to go on the floor and play one last time, including Maddy Downing, who recorded two kills in her final match.
Live Oak followed that up with a tough final match against Leland, where the Acorns could have played spoiler to the Chargers’ league standings.
Leland won the night, however, 25-19, 26-24, 24-26, 25-19.
Coleman said Game 2 could have gone either way and noted at the end of the match, the girls weren’t hanging their heads.
She said there was a sense of solid growth among the girls, who endured losing 11 straight matches along with the loss of their coach early in October.
“What everyone tells me is the girls have improved a lot,” Coleman said.
Coleman said she was proud of the girls for putting in the work and trying to implement what she was teaching, even if they had only learned it the day before.
There’s still a lot of questions around Live Oak heading into the off season, not the least of which who the coach will be next year.
Coleman wasn’t able to comment as to whether she would be coming back or not, even though players and parents are pressing hard for her return.
Also up in the air is whether Live Oak will fall to the Santa Teresa Division next year after a two-win performance in the Mt. Hamilton Division this year.
Coleman said that decision will come later and largely depend on what the other schools want to do.
