Morgan Hill – In the first two seasons of field hockey at Sobrato High, the Bulldogs managed a combined 2-24-2 record.
With a 2-0 win at home Wednesday against Berkeley, Sobrato has now more than doubled that win total and improved its record to 5-7 overall and 3-4 in the Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division.
“Just watching with every game, you see learning. I saw some wonderful play,” Bulldogs coach Carmen Villegas said. “Just because they’re developing and blossoming and applying some of the stuff they’re learning in practice – and applying is the big thing.”
The incredibly young team, which has seven sophomores, three freshman and only one senior on its roster, has now won three of its past four league contests.
“It’s really amazing that Sobrato, it’s a new school and already in our third year we’re actually winning games now,” said Jessica Naranjo, the team’s lone senior who experience the past two frustrating seasons.
The Bulldogs struck early in this game, with sophomore Jennifer Tran knocking home a goal 10:53 into the game with assists from sophomores Lindsay VanKuelan and Jenna Vivian.
“I thought it was really exciting because usually we have a hard time starting off the game,” Tran said. “So it was really good for us to start off so then we had really good confidence for the rest of the game.”
Another sophomore, Sarina Santiago, made it 2-0 with 5:33 remaining in the first half when she fired a shot past the Yellowjacket goaltender.
In the second half Sobrato did well to maintain the lead. They controlled the ball for much of the game and never allowed Berkeley to mount much of a threat.
“It’s not very often we have the ball on attack so much,” said Vivian, who led the team with eight of its 23 shots and was a force all over the field.
