First-place Bulldogs roll past Yerba Buena to move to 5-0
San Jose – The Sobrato High girls volleyball team kept its winning streak alive with a 25-13, 25-11, 25-13 win over a strong Yerba Buena squad on the road Tuesday.
Laura Billos had eight kills to pace the first-place Bulldogs, who improved to 7-4 overall and 5-0 in Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division play and got Homecoming Week off to a great start.
Jordyn Hanne, Ariel Mosbrucker and Kayla Unger all chipped in with seven kills each. Lisa Schroedter added 17 digs and Nicole Simoneau dished out 33 assists.
“The team is playing such balanced ball right now,” said coach Rosemary Miller. “Nicole is setting a great game, and the team is finally believing they can win.”
The game started off tough, with Simoneau setting up Mosbrucker on a beautiful back set, but the shot just sailed out.
After that, there were very few mistakes and the team attacked the net the whole game and earned the victory.
Sobrato’s next “home” game will be Tuesday against San Jose High Academy at 5pm at Live Oak. The Bulldogs are without access to their gym for the remainder of the season due to repairs being made.
Field Hockey
Morgan Hill – The Bulldogs won their second straight BVAL game and got their first road win by beating San Jose High Academy 2-0 on Wednesday.
Megan Rotter scored the first goal for Sobrato with assists from Melanie Delmue and Sarina Santiago. Jenna Vivian added the second goal on a Rotter assist and Liz Gordan, Rachel Nin and Jessica Naranjo played solid defense in the win.
Sobrato (4-6, 2-3) also won a thriller last Friday, beating Branham 1-0 in overtime for their first BVAL win.
Vivian scored the game-winner 3:40 into the overtime period on an cross pass from Remy Gross.
Sobrato is also coming off a successful fourth-place finish at the Los Altos Tournament over the weekend.
Girls Tennis
Morgan Hill – Sobrato matched up against first-place Branham and fell 6-1 on Tuesday.
The loss dropped the Bulldogs to 0-9 on the season while Branham moved to 9-0.
Girls Water Polo
Morgan Hill – The Bulldogs kept it close in the first half against Evergreen Valley, but the Cougars pulled away in the second half to win 11-5.
Sobrato, which got three goals from Amelia Greenland and a goal each from Melanie Jasper and Amanda Daspit, scored twice in the second period to make it 3-2 at halftime, but Evergreen scored five goals in the third to help pull away.
The Bulldogs dropped to 0-4 in league play this season, while the Cougars moved to 2-2.
Boys Water Polo
Morgan Hill – Piedmont Hills scored four goals in each period in a 16-2 win over Sobrato.
The Bulldogs scored their lone goals in the first and fourth period.
JV Volleyball
San Jose – The Bulldogs JV team kept up its red-hot play with a 25-12, 25-10 sweep of Yerba Buena.
Sobrato remained unbeaten at 5-0 in league play and improved its overall record to an impressive 10-1.
Freshman Kelly Kreulen played another big game at the net and delivered three crucial kills. Fellow Freshman Alyssa Warren came on strong attacking everything in her reach.
Sophomores Debbie Keen, Arielle Musgrave, McKenna Gordon and Sarah Martin continued to provide steady play, while new serving sensation Jeannine Casas delivered big in Game 2.
