Sobrato will try to ride momentum from last week’s win
Morgan Hill – The Sobrato High football team has a chance to have its first winning streak of the season when it travels to face Andrew Hill tonight at 7.
The Bulldogs (2-3-1, 2-1 Blossom Valley Athletic League West Valley Division) beat winless Yerba Buena 35-15 last week, but in the process lost their quarterback Erick Levell to an ACL injury.
“It was terrible. To see Erick go down just upset me beyond belief,” senior running back Erik Woodruff said after last week’s win.
Levell already missed the first three games of the season with a broken thumb so fellow sophomore quarterback Alex Meldrum will be under center with three starts already under his belt.
Woodruff had his best game of the season last week with 165 yards and three touchdowns on 15 carries. He leads the team with 457 rushing yards on the season and has averaged 124.3 yards per game over the past three contests, breaking the 100-yard barrier twice.
Last week’s solid performance in a game Sobrato knew it should win was a boost to a team that is in the beginning stages of building a foundation for success at the school.
“It boosts our confidence a lot,” sophomore running back and defensive back Anthony Zizzo said after the game. “Especially because we have a tough game next week and this will really help us.”
Zizzo caught a 32-yard touchdown pass from Levell and made a key play on defense when he stole the ball away from a Yerba Buena ball carrier.
While the team is still haunted by its 7-6 loss to Prospect and 7-7 tie against Cupertino, it feels good about having a winning record in league at this stage in the season.
“I feel we could’ve been at a higher position,” Woodruff said. “But I feel right now we’re at a good spot and we can take it to the rest of the teams in our league.”
