A Morgan Hill man died in a traffic accident early Monday morning in San Jose, when the intoxicated driver of the sedan he was riding in crashed into several parked cars, police said.
About 2 a.m. Monday, San Jose police responded to a report of an accident near the intersection of Pearl Avenue and Hillsdale Drive, according to a press release from the San Jose Police Department.
When officers arrived they located a gray Toyota Avalon that had struck at least one nearby parked vehicle, police said. The passenger was pinned inside the vehicle, and San Jose Fire personnel extricated him from the Toyota.
The passenger, later identified as Henry Olmedo, 40 of Morgan Hill, was immediately pronounced dead at the scene, police said.
The driver, Martin Alejandro Acosta-Alvarado, 18 of San Jose, was transported to an area hospital and treated for non-life- threatening injuries, according to police. Acosta-Alvarado was later arrested on suspicion of felony DUI and vehicular manslaughter with gross negligence for his role in the accident that killed Olmedo.
The preliminary investigation into the accident found that Acosta-Alvarado was driving the Toyota northbound at high speed on Pearl Avenue, police said. As the driver attempted to negotiate a turn onto Hillsdale Drive, he lost control of the vehicle and hit a nearby parked car on the north side of Hillsdale Drive.
“The force of this collision caused a chain reaction involving a total of five parked cars,” the press release said.
Acosta-Alvarado was booked at Santa Clara County Jail after he was treated for injuries, police said.
