Gilroy pedestrian, 63, critically injured in felony hit and run

At 11:05 p.m. June 21, Gilroy Police officers responded to reports of a hit and run collision involving a vehicle vs. a pedestrian on the 1300 block of First Street.
Officers arrived and discovered the unconscious victim on the roadway, according to GPD Sgt. Pedro Espinoza. Emergency and medical personnel arrived to render first aid treatment and transported the victim to a South Bay Trauma Center, where he remains in critical condition. The victim, whose name is being withheld, is a 63-year-old Gilroy resident.
Witnesses described the suspect vehicle as a white, four-door compact car that may have sustained front end damage, and/or damage to the front windshield, according to a GPD press release. This vehicle was last seen speeding away westbound on First Street and north on Kelton Drive, Espinoza reports.
“Multiple officers responded to the scene to conduct an extensive area search for the vehicle. Despite their efforts, they were not able to locate it,” said Espinoza.
Members of the Gilroy Police Department’s Major Accident Investigation Team (MAIT) responded to the scene and assumed the investigation. They worked through the night and morning hours to gather evidence. This incident continues to be an active investigation, according to Espinoza.
