The Cubs overcame a 7-6 loss to the Mets on Monday to win 9-8 in a winner-take-all championship game Wednesday to claim the Bronco Division National League pennant.

The Cubs will the American League champion Athletics today at noon at Britton Field for the Bronco Division City Championship.

With the Cubs down to their final out and the tying run on third in Wednesday’s game, Dan Cleeton stepped up and delivered a line drive to score the tying run.

Steven Baird followed with another line drive single and stole second to put runners on second and third with two outs.

David Robinson then hit a sharp ball to second to knock in the winning run and send the Cubs to the city championship.

Jack Ross went four solid innnings on the mound for the Cubs, while also going 3-for-4 with three runs scored. Alden Styczynski was 2-for-4 with two solid base hits and also had three RBIs.

Sean Silveira pitched well into the fourth inning and led off the game with a hit and had a run scored. Cleeton went 3-for-4 in addition to scoring the winning run.

The Mets’ Brent Newton, who was pitching for the fourth time in nine days, was overpowering through the first four innings, while also getting a hit and scoring a run.

Jonah Guary had a triple and two runs scored and provided some solid defense for the Mets. Jordan Lozada was 2-for-3 with a triple and two runs scored.

Derek Rousseu pitched two innings for the Mets, including a 1-2-3 inning in the sixth that kept the Mets’ on top 8-7.

This was the seventh meeting between the two teams this season, as they battle twice in the preseason, twice in the regular season and three times in the playoffs.

The Athletics advanced to face the Cubs by virtue of a 7-1 win on Monday over the Angels in the American League championship game.

The A’s set the tone in the top of the first when shortstop Andrew Perez fielded a grounder and fired home to cut down the Angels’ Nelson Pyle at the plate.

Then their offense got rolling with three runs in the bottom of the inning. Alex Hagiperos led off with a triple, Perez walked and Kyle Villa singled both runners home before scoring himself on an error.

The Angels got on the board in the third when Pyle doubled home Conor Havstad, who had walked and stolen second base.

The A;s pushed the lead to 5-1 in the bottom of the inning when Villa delivered a two-run homer and they added two more runs in the fifth for the 7-1 win to advance to the city championship.

Mustang Division

The American League regular season champion Yankees stayed hot Monday, as they knocked off the Athletics 6-4 to secure a spot in the Mustan Division City Championship game.

After holding the A’s scoreless in the top of the first inning, the Yankees jumped out to an early 6-4 lead in the bottom of the inning.

Stephan Gause led off with a walk and stole second and third and scored on a sacrifice fly by Mitch Hickey. Wesley Guild and Christian Ukanwa both drew walks and after a wild pitch advanced both runners, Domenic Zanotto smashed a double to left-center field to score both runs. Zanotto scored when he stole third base and the throw got past the infielder.

The A’s rebounded in the third inning. After already scoring two runs to cut the deficit to 4-2, the A’s Cole Griffin lined a double to drive in a pair of runs and tie the game.

In the bottom of the third, Hickey drove in Gause with the go-ahead run. Hickey then stole third and scored on a wild pitch to make it 6-4.

Hickey then took control on the mound and struck out eight batters of the final three innings of work – including the last six to end the game – to secure the win.

The 17-2 Yankees will now take on the National League champion Marlins on Saturday at 11:30am for the city championship.
