The drawn-out saga of who Floyd Mayweather Jr. will fight next could be nearing a close, and all signs in the boxing world point to Gilroy native Robert Guerrero being his opponent.
BoxingNews24.com reported Friday night that Golden Boy Promotions matchmaker Robert Diaz said an announcement is on the “verge” of being made that Mayweather will face Guerrero on May 4 at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas.
Saul “Canelo” Alvarez recently announced via Twitter that he will fight Austin Trout on May 4, fueling speculation that Mayweather-Guerrero is a done deal.
Mayweather tweeted last week that negotiations were close to done on a deal for him to fight Devon Alexander, but ESPN quickly reported that Guerrero remained Mayweather’s likely opponent.
Guerrero (31-1-1, 18 KOs), the interim WBC welterweight champion, has publicly campaigned for a fight against pound-for-pound king Mayweather (43-0, 26 KOs) for months.
