Morgan Hill – No one was injured and property damage was minimal after someone apparently put papers and cardboard into two empty lockers and set them on fire at Live Oak High School.
Santa Clara County Fire Department Battalion Chief Richard Salazar said the fire was likely started with a match or lighter and not with an accelerant, such as gasoline.
Live Oak High School Principal Nick Boden said students were dismissed June 14 – on a minimum-day schedule – approximately 30 minutes before the fire, at approximately 1pm, was reported by a teacher in a nearby portable. Boden said while one teacher was on the phone calling about the fire, a second teacher grabbed a fire extinguisher and put out the fire.
The lockers are in a block located near the tennis courts on the west side of campus. The group of lockers is one that is scheduled to be removed this summer, as a continuation of school renovations.
Salazar said the department will take note of the fire, particularly because of the May 28 fire at Britton Middle School.
“With anything like this, you want to pay attention,” he said. “It might turn out to be a one-time thing, just nothing, or just someone trying to get attention. If it’s something that builds, that leads to something bigger, that’s what we want to watch out for.”
