Dear Editor,

As an area resident, I am happy to support Measure A which raises revenues that can be spent how and where we need them: on health care, transportation, and other local programs. The county has been struggling to maintain services for the past few years, but costs are increasing – and the state and federal governments do not always pay their fair share.

Here in South County, we are acutely aware of the demand for health and human services. Many people don’t know that the county funds the San Martin clinic, other health services such as the Valley Medical Center, on which a rising number of our adult residents without health insurance are relying for primary care. The county is also a major supporter of the Healthy Kids health insurance initiative, which covers many children of working poor families.

The county provides its cities and its residents with invaluable services every year, but revenues are not keeping pace with the cost of doing business. We need to take care of our local needs with local dollars.
